The Jackson County Department of Transportation was originally the Jackson County Road Commission.
In the 1970’s John Lefere entered into a land deal with the road commission to purchase the road commission headquarters at 1300 North West Avenue for his new Ford dealership in exchange for building a brand new headquarters on the corner of Chanter Road and Elm Street in Blackman Township along with an accompanying 200 acres of fallow land.
The new headquarters was constructed in the 1970s with the “modernistic” geometric design of the time using brick veneer with large open areas and plenty of windows to allow natural illumination. Although the design fell out of favor during the 1980s, this unaltered building is a sterling example of the modernistic movement.
