  • Registrations

Obtaining Records

Request for any record must be requested through a Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA Request) to the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff. This FOIA request can be completed online, by email link, or by United States Mail.

Fingerprinting

The Sheriff's Office Records Division has the capability of taking electronic Live Scan fingerprints or digitally printed fingerprints.

License to Purchase a Firearm (LTP)

As of February 2024, all citizens without a CPL and live outside the city limits will need to obtain a LTP through the Jackson County Sheriff's Office to purchase a handgun.  City residents can apply for a LTP through the City of Jackson Police Department at 216 E. Washington Ave. If you are purchasing any long guns after 2/13/2024 from a private seller, you must come and obtain a LTP.

Must be 18 years old or older to obtain a License to Purchase.
  • Respond to your local Police Department or Sheriff's Office with a current & valid Michigan Driver's License or State ID. A LPT can be obtained from any Michigan police agency that issues LPT. You do not need to obtain a LPT from the jurisdiction in which you reside.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Once the LPT has been issued you have 30 days to use it.
  • After you purchase a handgun you have 10 days to return the registration copy back to the agency where you obtained it. It can be mailed back.
  • You must keep the purchasers copy of the LPT with the gun for 30 days after the purchase.
