The Environmental Health Division inspects public pools in Jackson County to ensure the pools are following Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) guidelines. Local health department sanitarians perform annual inspections on the county’s pools. Each pool must submit payment for a sanitarian to perform the annual inspection. Seasonal pools must pass an inspection before they are allowed to open for operation for the season. Each inspection is sent to the MDEQ to process and issue annual licenses. Inspection reports can be on the MDEQ’s website at

In addition, each public pool is required to submit a weekly coliform sample to the health department from a certified lab along with a
monthly operational report (PDF). A public pool will be closed if it is not operating in compliance with all state and local rules and regulations.
All rules governing public swimming pools are defined by the
Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Water Bureau Public Act (PDF)
